Texas Chili is a classic spicy bean-free chili known for its smoky, beefy and full flavor. Perfect for those cool fall and winter nights! It’s also one of those dishes that tastes even better the next day.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 4 hours on high, 8 hours on low, this will depend on your slow cooker
Serves: 6-8
Ingredients:
3 T. Oil
3 lbs. Ground hamburger or stew meat or a mixture of both
1 Medium onion, chopped
1 T. Minced garlic
1 (28 oz. Or so) crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce, or mix with diced tomatoes
1 (6 oz.) Small can tomato paste
3 C. Beef broth
1 T. Brown sugar
1 ½ T. Apple cider vinegar
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
2 tsp. Unsweetened cocoa
1/4 C. Chili powder or ancho chili powder
1 T. Cumin
1 T. Paprika
1 T. Oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
What to do:
In the slow cooker add your crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, brown sugar, vinegar, cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa, chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt and pepper to taste, stir.
If using all stew meat:
In a large stock pot over medium high heat add in your cooking oil. Once hot add your stew meat and brown on all sides. Add in your onions and garlic, make sure to get all those little brown bits and pieces up from the bottom of the pan, those have wonderful flavor. Once translucent add to slow cooker and stir.
If using a mixture of stew meat and ground hamburger:
In a large stock pot over medium high heat add in your cooking oil. Once hot add your stew meat and brown on all sides. Add in your onions and garlic, make sure to get all those little brown bits and pieces up front the bottom of the pan, those have wonderful flavor! Once translucent add in your hamburger, cook until no longer pink then add to slow cooker and stir.
If your using ground hamburger:
Cook until partially cooked then add your onions and garlic. Cook until no longer pink, add to slow cooker, stir.
Depending on your slow cooker you can cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 to 10 hours.
